Okay, I know these are in demand, but this is starting to get out of hand.

asking prices for items is out of control for the most part. Ebay has gotten bad and so have the Facebook groups.

Which Facebook groups are you referring to? I had a look, but couldn't see any groups where people offer items for sale. Would be curious to check those out!

These are the two I frequent -

Of course by sharing this information it entitles me to boot you from one auction or trump you on buying a single item!   :P

Watch the FB groups.  Roleplaying Games Trade Sell on FB isn't too bad, but the moderator has an itchy trigger finger on the 'ban hammer'.  They forbid any comments on price and just go with the "don't buy it if the price is too high" strategy.  Of course this leads to more people pricing stuff higher and artificial inflation of items because of what people see in the listings.  I cringe when someone says "I want X $$ and I know it's worth it because I checked eBay".

A good example is a listing about a few months ago for the 5E spell cards from GF9.  As you may be aware, they were OOP while GF9 worked with WotC to correct some errors on the cards.  Of course this led to "OMG...They are out of print and are worth a fortune" and some guy posted a "complete set" for $200.  People politely posted hints that they are OOP, but GF9 said it's only temporary and they will all be reprinted.  He didn't take the hint.  When someone showed interest, I wanted to scream "no you fool, these are not collectible, they are not OOP and they are not worth 3x retail".  If I did, I would have been banned.

Keegan uses the banhammer for good and not evil. There is a lot less crap on his group than any other I've come across.

My take is that these groups only work if people do abide by the rules and avoid giving their "informed" comments in each auction/sale. Everyone should be free to set whatever price they want for their belongings, no matter how outrageous. Besides, in this funny collecting business things are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Your suggested price or the supposed "market" price, is just that, a suggestion, or your personal take.

Thinking someone is a fool or stupid for paying higher than you would pay for a given item is just plain lame. Take it as an opportunity and put yours for sale at that price too. Maybe you are lucky.

If I tell my mom I paid 200 bucks for an old carton box with 2 booklets she would give me hell for months. Think about it, and respect others.

Hello d3rmond, welcome to the Acaeum!  Glad you decided to come out of the shadows.

In my opinion, this thread isn't about making fun of anyone, although some might disagree.  It's about pointing out what Acaeum members consider to be silly prices.  This not only informs members, especially those that are newer to collecting, of a potential rip-off, but it also calls out sellers that are either attempting to rip someone off, made a mistake in their listing, or are incapable of performing basic research to determine what a reasonable price is for what they are selling.  I suspect that a few sellers that set ridiculous prices are in the first category.  They are trying to snag an unwitting buyer, or someone that REALLY wants the item.

Sure, someone might be willing to pay way too much for an item.  That is there prerogative.  I've done it myself on a few occasions.  That doesn't mean that I would be offended if someone pointed it out.  It's the truth, whether I was aware of it or not.  Sometimes the truth hurts.  I can disagree with their opinion.  But, to make an uninformed purchase is just plain silly, thus the reason for this rather innocuous topic.

This world that we live in today, where everyone has to be "politically correct", is out of control.  We cannot offend anyone in the slightest bit, even if they are wrong, even those that are trying to take advantage of someone else.  No offense, but I don't buy it. :)

The example you provided proves the point.  Your mom wouldn't hesitate to give you hell for making what she considers to be a ridiculous purchase.  The same applies here on the Acaeum.  The difference is in the perspective.  Your mom wouldn't have seen the value in your purchase, as she was either uninformed or not interested in the collectible value of the item.  Acaeum members ARE informed and VERY interested.  That's why they are members. They know what a reasonable price is for the items we collect, and when a silly price pops up, they can use this topic to inform fellow members of it.

Yes, there is some humor in the posts, and perhaps it's at a seller's or buyer's expense.  Yes, someone might be offended by the inclusion of their item, but ultimately these posts serve to inform the community of what is considered, by its members, to be a silly price to pay for an item.

Thanks! And thanks for the other input everyone. I was just curious about how such a Facebook group would work. Have yet to find out, as neither admin has responded to my request to join :P Never a good sign in my mind to have such a closed community. Oh well!

You're welcome.  :)

At least one, if not both, used to be open groups but since posting is free, scammers and fake profiles would post everything from cell phones to porn. They had to close them to keep it for the real buyers and sellers. A necessary evil for that forum unfortunately.

I can't remember which FB group it was I was referring to. Maybe RPG Auctions? Some seller had one of the 80's Dungeons and Dragons games by Mattel. Box was in so-so shape, contents were excellent. His buyout (BIN) price was $150.

Someone had bid it up to $80 with a few days left before ending. I personally thought it was too high. Scouring ebay I found several with similar or better contents and much better boxes from quite a bit less to a little less.

Today, at least I think it was today, someone had a OCE white box in shrink for $1000 or more and a 2nd edition Chainmail for $800? maybe $600.

might be a member here selling them. dunno. i personally wouldn't pay that much, but I'm cheap. a bad thing to be in this hobby I suppose. just my 2 cents

If interested in this one, there is a DMG you may want to consider buying too.   :)

Both have gone $700-750+ in the past but depends on condition: from more recent sales $600 and $500 might be closer the mark for nice copies (most 2nd Chainmails aside from that recent BIN - which vanished like a shot - have been faulty).
Of course, if their sales are dog-eared, torn-shrinked, etc., too... :)

For a 2nd Edition Chainmail in nice condition, I would expect it to sell in the neighborhood of $750-$900....
Nice being Very Fine or better....
No large cover stains or inside page stains;
No separated covers;
No writing at all, or at most a small name written on an inside front page;
no large folds/bends/dog eared covers;
the rust to staples would need to be at a minimum and only a little rust to the inside pages and outside covers (Better if none).

Most of those copies I have seen selling on e-Bay (recently) have at least two or more of those issues.
Those with several of the issues above: would not get my interest enough to bid over $400.

For a NM copy with none of those issues?
If I did not have one already; I would pay $900 and not even blink and in an auction with two or more serious collectors/bidders, I could picture it going well over $1,000.
