Perhaps the strangest of all official D&D modules.  Both were written by Gary Gygax, and draw heavily on Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland novels (EX1 from Alice in Wonderland, EX2 from Through the Looking Glass).  Each was designed as a "tack-on" adventure to an existing campaign; i.e., the characters could "fall down a hole" and be transported to one of these fantastic lands.  Thanks to Curtis Anderson for help with this info.

EX1 Dungeonland by Gary Gygax
EX2 Land Beyond the Magic Mirror
by Gary Gygax

Both of these modules are now available in our Library section.

Interestingly, the cover artwork for these modules was inadvertently switched: the cover of EX1 shows the encounter with the Roc from pg 12 of EX2, and the cover of EX2 shows the encounter with the Hangman Trees from pg 8 of EX1!  (Thanks to Jon Wilson for pointing this out).

Module codes GC1 and GC2 were originally earmarked for these modules (presumably "Greyhawk Castle"?), but were dropped for unknown reasons (thanks to Ian Malcomson for this info).

Printing Information Logos

Dungeonland

  • First:  No cardboard header.

  • Second:  Contents identical to First, but has a cardboard header glued to the top of the module, with the D&D logo and some other advertising.  The module itself, separated from the header, is indistinguishable from a First printing.  Thanks to Michael Deaton for the scan.  Further info on header modules is here.

Land Beyond the Magic Mirror

  • First:  No cardboard header.  Thanks to Adrian Newman for the scan.

  • Second:  Contents identical to First, but has a cardboard header glued to the top of the module, with the D&D logo and some other advertising.  The module itself, separated from the header, is indistinguishable from a First printing.  Thanks to Mike Kuo for the scan.  Further info on header modules is here.

Auction Commentary

The First printings of these modules are quite common.  The Second printings, with the headers intact, are fairly rare; SW condition assumes the header is present.  The Estimated Values on Second prints are highly subjective, since only recently have we realized their rarity.
